Resulta interesante señalar que son contradictorias las respuestas a la pregunta de si es posible combinar estos enfoques o si son excluyentes, que se dan tanto por parte de los involucrados en el debate, como por parte de análisis externos a ellos. Del mismo modo, resulta una pregunta que puede permanecer abierta en la medida en que hay quienes defienden la concepción sintáctica de las teorías científicas aún en la actualidad y sin dudas están en desarrollo las concepciones semanticistas y las concepciones alternativas –críticas y pragmáticas- respecto de lo que las teorías científicas y la ciencia, en general, son.
